Caitlin Seeger, a 14-year-old, tough-talking girl from Philadelphia. gets into trouble with the law after the death of her mother. Bounced from foster home to foster home, a judge offers her a choice: living at a youth correctional facility or moving in with her mother's cousin, Dori, a veterinarian in High River, Montana. She goes to live with Dori, her husband Jim, the town's sheriff and their 14-year-old son Griffen. Caitlin must adapt to the rural wilds of Montana and find her place in her new family and school.
