We've been clamoring for a female superhero film for years now. Principal focus in this call to arms has been on Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the purveyors of the best superhero flicks on the lot, and Warner Bros/DC Comics, what with Wonder Woman on their roster. But we've overlooked Sony, the company that lays claim to the Marvel property Spider-Man. As it turns out, per Deadline, the Amazing Spider-Man films might spawn the next female-centric superhero movie... but we're wondering if this will be a project worthy of that superlative.
Back in the early aughts, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 set the bar high for superhero cinema. After the much maligned third chapter in Sam Raimi's Peter Parker series, fans diverted attention to the Avengers pictures and Christopher Nolan's Batman films, hoping to find all their comic book wishes met within said parameters. Then came Amazing Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 2... which more or less validated this specified cynicism, turning over middling reviews and no small sum of fan backlash. But Marc Webb's features aren't devoid of charm. The shining light in both movies, in fact, is the sort of character that usually gets shafted, and big time: the "girlfriend."
Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) friend and young love, with far more moxy and character than are usually attributed to women in superhero films. Although we get venerable players like Natalie Portman and Liv Tyler playing the ladyfriends of Marvel heroes, agency is a palpable absentee; Gwyneth Paltrow, the strongest of the lot as Pepper Potts, only really conjured up some vigor for the third Iron Man movie. And female superhero Scarlett Johansson still hasn't gotten her long overdue starring feature.

While the DC side of the game is notably lacking in the same kind of pizzazz on the whole, its women can be noted as especially bland. Lois Lane, both versions of Rachel Dawes, and even Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle are particularly dull characters who function primarily as appendages of their respective heroes... even if one of 'em did run down an asthmatic Tom Hardy.
And yet Sony, perpretating movies that are altogether less impressively crafted than those of its competitors, gives us an interesting, courageous, and likable character in Stone's Gwen Stacy. She's funnier, smarter, braver, and more reasonable than her counterpart Peter, a rarity for a genre of film that prefers to use women as damsels in distress and set dressing. Beyond just being a more vivid presence in these films, Stacy actually contributes to both the plot — she is the most important factor in any one of Peter's actions and decisions — as well as the ultimate takedown of the central villain. In the end, she's more of a sidekick, a hero in her own right, than a girlfriend figure.
We don't know what sort of character Sony will put forth with its undisclosed superheroine film, but we're glad that they're the ones taking this step forward. But this isn't a free pass to further put off a Black Widow movie, Kevin Feige. Everyone needs to get in on this action!

10. COMPUTER CHESSIt doesn't have much to say about the human condition (beyond maybe highlighting our propensity for arrogance and self-directed delusion). It doesn't tell a story that'll stick with you for very long. But Computer Chess reigns supreme as, far and away, the funniest movie of 2013.
9. SPRING BREAKERS A dark, wicked, wholly upsetting reflection of the toxic direction in which we might be headed. And James Franco gives a tour-de-force of a performance with his demonic scoutmaster Alien.
8. IT'S A DISASTER An intelligent, meticulously directed farce about group politics and conflicting personal philosophies, executed to near perfection thanks to the rhythmic participation of a more than capable cast.
7. 12 YEARS A SLAVEAn unprecedented masterpiece that sings the traumas not only of Solomon Northrup, a free man captured and sold into slavery, but in his fellow sufferers as well. For my money, the true anchor of the story is in Lupita Nyong'o's Patsey, whose suffering is unlike anything we've seen managed on the big screen in years.
6. HER With so much to say about such tremendous topics, Her manages to still dive so deep into the heart of its story: the pangs of love in the wake of the inevitable fallibilities of romantic relationships. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson alike give dynamic performances, and Spike Jonze mystifies us with his strange, cold, all-too-familiar world.

5. THE SPECTACULAR NOWThis is one of those movies you try to convince yourself to inch out of your top 10, or five, for fear of being seen as juvenile. ButThe Spectacular Now hits such genuine notes with Miles Teller's Sutter, climaxing at a moment where you'll recognize an angst so true to life and so criminally absent from most movies about the journey toward self-love.
4. FRANCES HA Months and months after my first encounter with it, this deceptively simple film sticks in my head, reminding me that its every artful beat is riddled with emotional weight and ironic humor alike. Greta Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach give us the a New York movie to rival Annie Hall, zooming in and out of the perspective of the young women and men who occupy, and drown within, today's version of the biggest, most stupefying city in the world.
3. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVISSadness, coldness, loneliness, failure... such wonderful things when handled by filmmakers like the Coen Brothers. Padding this antithesis of triumph with some of the most beautiful, somber music you'll hear all year, Inside Llewyn Davis makes us fall in love all over again with the very idea of the artistic struggle.

2. THE WIND RISESHayao Miyazaki's final movie doesn't pass judgment on its hero, a man so devoted to his work (building weapons) that he neglects his wife, sister, and friends. It doesn't endorse these choices either. Instead, it hones in on the passions of its hero/antihero, challenging us to sympathize with a fellow whose only desire is to do his job while we lament his sacrifices. More even than Gravity does the frequently airborne animated picture induce dizzy spells as we connect with the conglomerate of colorful, intriguing characters in this grim but dainty biography.

1. SHORT TERM 12 There are so few flaws to highlight in The Wind Rises, Inside Llewyn Davis, Frances Ha, and the other entries on this top 10 list. What separates Short Term 12 is not a complete lack of error, but in an umatched spirit for the telling of its story. The movie wants us to feel the pains of counselor Grace (Brie Larson) and the disavantaged children for whom she cares, highlighting abused Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) and orphan Marcus (Keith Stanfield). It also wants us to feel the hope that it brings to these characters in their plight to overcome the hands they have been dealt. Every emotion in this movie carries through with such force. For those of us who know any of these trials personally, they ring tremendously true. For others, they work to invite you into this sad but hopeful world. We've been gifted with a ton of exemplary cinematic works this year, but nothing sticks with me more than this tearful, heartrending masterpiece.

Going against everything you understood to be the case in middle school, it's actually apparently way cooler to do things within the confines of an authoritative party's consent. Beyoncé and Jay-Z, voted Most Popular in the junior high yearbook that is American show business, were admonished by many for an allegedly unauthorized trip to Cuba — which, in case you've obtained all your education from your senile grandfather's anecdotes about the Hoover era, is a place we're totally still not allowed to visit, inscrutably. But there are exceptions: Reuters reports that the Carters' voyage was fully licensed by the United States government, operating under the stipulations of America's embargo on our neighbor to the south.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z's fifth wedding anniversary, celebrated in Havana, met one of the three requirements for an American's trip to Cuba: the trip has to serve academic, religious, or cultural purposes, the latter being the stamp of approval earned by the musical pair.
So how, exactly, did Beyoncé and Jay-Z's beachside trip warrant denotation as a cultural excavation? Is it simply considered an act of charity for Beyoncé to sully herself by gracing the presence of we mere mortals? Did Jay-Z institute during his trip to Cuba an ad-hoc program teaching youths how to transform their streetwise moxy into a multi-million dollar enterprise? Did they at least sing to people?

Bill Clinton was made for TV. He's got the moxy. And he's used it on many a talk show in his time: he's visited Johnny Carson, Jon Stewart, and, most memorably, Arsenio Hall. But there is one talk show host who has been apparently inviting Clinton on his show for fifteen years: Bill O'Reilly. Up until now, Clinton has made no appearance on the political commentator's program, The O'Reilly Factor, although O'Reilly admits that Clinton has consistently stated his intentions to participate on an episode. But this coming Tuesday, the former president will officially sit down with O'Reilly for the first time on the show. So what is to be expected from this long-awaited meeting of these ideologically divergent men? A chaotic shouting match over the differences in their political views? A civil examination of one another's values in order to reach a more profound understanding of our present state of affairs? Whichever it is, there had better be some time alotted for a sax solo. Doctor Who is hardly a stranger to casting changes; still, when some likeable characters come along, it's always a disappointment to see them go again. The Doctor's companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, will be parting ways with their time traveling friend sometime during the show's upcoming seventh series. Executive Producer Steven Moffat confirmed that, as has been tradition, the Doctor will find himself in the company of a new friend soon enough. Furthermore, we might be seeing a return of Alex Kingston to the program, who played Amy's and Rory's daughter River Pond. The Doctor Who Christmas special will air on Christmas Day at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America. -TVLine

The daredevil performed a rendition of Lil Wayne's Runnin' at the event in West Chester, Pennsylvania on Saturday (23Jul11), which was held in memory of his friend who died in a high-speed car crash last month (Jun11), alongside Margera's Jackass co-star Ryan Dunn.
The fundraiser was held by two bands, The Moxy and Backwoods Payback - who were pals of both Dunn and Hartwell - in a bid to raise funds for Hartwell's widow, Rachel.
Moxy bassist Ahmed Smith tells the West Chester Daily Local News, "Tonight's pretty much about taking a bunch of Ryan and Zach's friends and getting together and having a good time. We basically just took a house party and put it into a show."
Dunn and Hartwell were killed when the Jackass star lost control of his Porsche while travelling at more than 130 miles per hour (209 kilometres per hour) near West Chester. Officials subsequently revealed Dunn had been drinking with friends before the accident and was intoxicated when he got behind the wheel.
