Singer/songwriter Carole King was so reluctant to see her life unfold on the Broadway stage in the play Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, she waited four months to see it after walking out of a preview. The Natural Woman hitmaker admits she didn't want the production to be made in the first place and found it difficult to watch harrowing scenes from her own life, especially revolving around her relationship with husband and songwriting partner Gerry Goffin.
She explains, "These were painful times... and when I went to the reading, I didn't want to hear it for the first time that he (Goffin) wanted to sleep with someone else. When I heard it the second time at the end of the first act, I just got up and left.
"I said, 'I'm not going to the show', and I didn't go to opening night. I did finally go see the show, I went in disguise... It was everything I don't look like; I had a dark wig with straight hair. I had glasses.
"I came in and I sat there; I figured if I smile or spoke it was all over... and I watched the show. The parts I was afraid of didn't bother me so much... (but) the part where my mother gave me a pep talk... I lost my mother four years ago; she was 94... She gave me that pep talk... I was bawling my eyes out and I'm thinking, 'Everyone is going to recognise me, but everyone else is bawling their eyes out (too)."
King was so impressed with the show she sneaked backstage and joined the cast for an encore.

Actress Octavia Spencer is a lifelong fan of Keanu Reeves after he unexpectedly gave her a helping hand when she was left stranded in her car just after arriving in Los Angeles.
The Oscar winner moved from her native Alabama to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting, and when she was on her way to one of her first auditions, she was dealt an untimely blow when her car broke down on one of Los Angeles' busiest streets.
She recalled the incident to U.S. TV personality Meredith Vieira on her talk show on Wednesday (17Sep14), saying, "No one would help me because my car was so dirty - I had been parking my car underneath a tree so birds were just having a field day all over my car and I never washed. It wasn't until Keanu Reeves came by. He was on a motorcycle, wearing his motorcycle helmet and sunglasses and I didn't recognise it was him when he pulled over. And he was like, 'Hey, do you need some help?'"
Spencer was planning on having the Matrix star get in the car while she pushed it to the side of the road, but he refused and pushed the car himself. She said, "I was so mortified. I was like, 'Oh no, hes gonna touch my car!'. And I was looking terrible, I had a shirt with holes (in it), I wasn't wearing any underwear. So to this day, I go to his movie every opening weekend, because that was a sweet thing to do. But I will never remind him of that moment because when I say I was looking foul, I don't want that memory to come back (to him)."
Goldie Hawn is opening up about her past struggles with anxiety over finding fame in Hollywood at a young age. The veteran actress' breakout role came in 1968 when she was just 23 years old as a dancer for classic sketch show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, but her overnight success sparked unbearable stress.
In an interview with Queen Latifah on her U.S. talk show on Wednesday (17Sep14), Hawn recalls, "Suddenly I'm pulled out of the chorus and now I'm going into a big show on TV and I really started having anxiety attacks.
"I didn't want to be a star. I wanted to be a dancer. I had been dancing since I was three. I wanted to go home (and) open a dancing school. I wanted to get married. I wanted a 'normal' life. I thought everyone was so screwed up out here (Los Angeles) and I thought I don't want that life."
Hawn sought out medical help to figure out how to cope with her debilitating reaction to fame, adding, "I went to a psychologist to deal with my anxiety, which was a nonspecific anxiety. I'd have panic attacks or I'd go somewhere and get really hot and dizzy and scared.
"I was destabilised and decentralised. I used to be this really happy, young, kid dancer... but then suddenly something happened and I didn't know where I was. I wasn't with my dancer friends anymore. I knew I wasn't going to go home anymore. They (fans) were asking for my autograph when they didn't even know me. It was really bad."
Sharon Osbourne was once placed on mental lockdown after drunkenly slashing her left wrist with a steak knife to prove how much she loved her now-husband Ozzy. The rock matriarch was 27 and had just started dating the married Black Sabbath frontman when she decided to express her undying love for the heavy metal star in a bloody fashion while holed up in a hotel during a tour stop in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Coming clean about the scars on her arm during Wednesday's (17Sep14) episode of her U.S. daytime show The Talk, she prefaced the story by explaining, "This is a secret... only Ozzy and I know; my children I have never told. I've never discussed it out of embarrassment of how stupid I was at the time to have done such a thing to myself..."
She then continued, "When we first got together, we would drink a lot together... We had a session of romance, drinking, partying. It was about four in the morning and he says to me, 'How much do you really love me? I don't know if this relationship is gonna last' and I was saying, 'I'd do anything for you, anything. I absolutely adore you... I'd give my life for you'. (He says), 'OK, prove it'.
"It wasn't him, it was me, me, me... I'm very dramatic... and when I say something, I like to follow it through, so I'm like, 'I'll show you how much I love you', so I went to a room service table (in the room)... and there was a steak knife. So I get the knife and I go (slash at wrists), 'I love you so much', slash, slash, slash, on my wrist. And unfortunately for me, I kinda went too deep and it wouldn't stop bleeding... I got very sober, very quickly."
Emergency services were called to treat Sharon's wounds, but paramedics were so convinced she had attempted to commit suicide, she was taken to hospital and placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold.
Sharon was only released after medics were satisfied she wasn't completely crazy, and she now admits it's a time in her life she will always regret.
She concludes, "I permanently scarred my wrists, I was on lockdown for being over dramatic and drunk at the time...
"So if anybody out there who likes to cut or harm themselves or try and prove (something) to someone, firstly let me tell you these scars are a big embarrassment. I tell everyone I was attacked by a dog - which I was... but it was the other arm...! It's sad, pathetic on a 61 year old. It's a reminder to us all."
Sharon and Ozzy wed in 1982, shortly after he divorced his first wife Thelma Riley.
After her TV confession, Sharon took to Twitter and revealed telling the story was a big relief. She wrote: "I wanted to share my secret because it is a lesson to be learned."
British pop star Katy B has shared an emotional tribute to her brother following his death over the weekend (13-14Sep14). The singer's sibling Andrew had been left brain-damaged and paralysed following an accident 18 months ago, and he passed away on Saturday (13Sep14) after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The Lights On hitmaker posted a picture of Andrew as a child on her Instagram.com page, and remembered her beloved brother in a touching message.
She writes, "The most beautiful soul I ever knew passed away. He had a cardiac arrest and his heart stopped. I am still in total and utter shock. My one and only brother Andrew Brien did not deserve to die this young... Andrew had previously had an accident which left him severely brain damaged to the point of being completely paralysed, not being able to talk or move or do anything for him self (sic), almost like a coma state, anyone who knows someone with brain injury will tell you how devastating it is, grieving and missing someone who is still alive.
"I guess he had finally thought f**k this, he is now free of pain and doctors and medication and can now look over all of us, having a good chuckle as he always did... Thank you to his kind kind friends that have come to visit and have raised money for the causes supporting his condition, we are so so grateful, I know we are all so thankful to have known him, I would give anything to have him back here again, but now we must honour his life, hopefully one day my heart will heal."
"As soon as it was announced I'd be on The View, I go into Costco (discount warehouse store), as I always do, and everyone took out their cell phones and everyone started recording me and my friend had a panic attack and I was worried about my friend, but I was also worried about myself because my hair looked a mess! I went over to this girl and... I asked if she was a Puerto Rican and she said, 'Of course, honey'... I went, 'Please, you understand the hair, please, delete, delete!'" Actress Rosie Perez urged one fan to erase an embarrassing snap of her messy hair after landing her new job as a panellist on U.S. talk show The View.
Actress-turned-U.S. TV personality Rosie O'Donnell debuted her slimmed down new look on her new show The View on Monday (15Sep14), revealing she has lost over 50 pounds (22.6 kilograms) since undergoing vertical gastric sleeve surgery last year (Jul13).
The A League of Their Own star, who once tipped the scales at 237 pounds (107.5 kilograms), started a new health kick after suffering a heart attack in 2012. And, as she joined Whoopi Goldberg, Nicole Wallace and Rosie Perez for the new season of the long-running U.S. talk show on Monday, O'Donnell revealed she's still coming to terms with her weightloss.
She said, "I'm not used to it yet. I still buy the wrong-sized clothes... A lot of people who have never had weight issues their whole life would assume that losing weight and going from morbidly obese to being able to buy clothes off the rack would be only full of happiness and positivity, but that's not true. It's also full of anxiety and vulnerability. I'm glad it's going at the rate it is because any faster than this would throw me into a panic."
And the actress revealed she has come to realise why she always felt safe and secure overweight, adding, "Some (people) gain weight as a layer of protection - to keep people away from them. I never wanted someone to want to approach me in a sexual manner because of my physical body and because of child abuse issues. So I think they are all interwoven and they don't exist separately so they come up, and I'm having to put out fires and talk to my therapist and get through it and find a different way to cope with my anxiety and my feelings of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) rather than eating over them."
O'Donnell wasn't the only woman on the new The View line-up who has shed the pounds - returning co-host Goldberg also showed off a slimmer figure, revealing, "I've lost about 35 pounds. I'm using (chef) Rocco DiSpirito's diet book The Pound A Day Diet. And I feel good."

German actor Joachim Fuchsberger has died at the age of 87. Fuchsberger passed away of organ failure on Thursday (11Sep14).
He began his acting career in German film Geh mach dein Fensterl auf in 1953 and went on to star in several TV shows and movies, including 08/15, Zu viele Koche and Hotel Royal, for which he received a Bambi Award for Best Actor in 1969.
In addition to his TV and film work, Fuchsberger served as the host of talk show Heut' abend and quiz show Auf Los geht's los in the 1970s and 1980s.
In 2012, he was feted with a lifetime achievement honour at the Bambi Awards.
Fuchsberger was previously married to pop singer Gitta Lind in 1951 to 1953 and is survived by his actress wife Gundula Korte.
The couple's composer son Thomas drowned in 2010.
Fuchsberger was a member of the Nazi Party's Hitler Youth organisation during World War Two. He was wounded and captured by Russian forces when he was just 16, and later handed over to the British allies, who put him to work as an engineer in Recklinghausen.
He became the first German ambassador for UNICEF in 1984.
Pop star Ed Sheeran was told off by his father after speaking out about his experiences with drugs.
The Lego house hitmaker revealed he smoked marijuana with an unnamed U.S. rapper and that ecstasy had inspired a song on his new album X. However, the comments upset his father John and he received a strongly-worded email from his dad advising him to watch what he says.
Sheeran tells U.S. shock jock Howard Stern, "When that came out I got an email from my dad saying 'Your career is flying, but the only thing that will f**k it all up is your mouth... Don't talk about drugs, politics, religion or money.'"
The star also admits that without cigarettes, his famous singing voice would not be the same: "When I attempted to stop smoking my voice goes (sic) - and when I am on tour I lose three gigs."
