Paul Simon paid tribute to his late friend Phil Everly by performing at an intimate benefit concert in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday (29Oct14). The veteran singer/songwriter was recruited by Everly's wife Patti, who organised the private event and had no one else in mind but Simon for the headlining role.
She tells Rolling Stone, "Phil loved hanging out with Paul and telling their stories when they toured together. And Paul loved Phil so much. So how can you not call Paul for your first choice? He starts playing and the world stops."
Simon, who helped reunite Everly with his brother Don for Simon & Garfunkel's Old Friends Tour in 2003, was introduced to the stage by singer Brenda Lee.
He kicked off the eight-song set with the classic The Sound of Silence, and soon followed with other favourites, including Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, The Boxer, Mrs. Robinson and a cover of the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun.
Simon even brought up Lee to join him for All I Have to Do Is Dream, and his rendition of When Will I Be Loved, which was written by Everly, brought tears to Patti's eyes.
The event was held at the Belle Meade house, which is featured on U.S. country music drama Nashville, and the show's stars, including Charles Esten, Sam Palladio, Jonathan Jackson, Chris Carmack and Charley Rose were present for the event.
Proceeds from the concert went to the COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Foundation, an organisation which raises funds and awareness for the same disease Everly died from earlier this year (Jan14).
Actor Mark Strong has dismissed reports suggesting he will be playing the villain in the next James Bond movie, insisting a hiking vacation he took with old pal Daniel Craig was behind the latest casting rumours. The two Brits set off to walk across the Atlas Mountains in Africa recently and when a photograph of the friends hit the Internet, 007 casting speculation quickly followed.
Strong tells WENN, "Daniel is a very good friend of mine. We've known each other for years and he's a godfather to my eldest child. The reason these rumours came about is because recently we went on a walking tour together in the Atlas Mountains. We took some time off to have some friend time; we hadn't seen each other for ages. Busy schedules mean you can't see each other and don't see your mates for a long time. And we went walking together.
"Someone took a picture and everybody's come to the conclusion I must be the new bad guy in the new Bond movie!"
Strong admits he'd love to be considered for the role because Bond villains are almost as iconic as the superspy, but he feels he might be better suited to playing one of 007's sidekicks after transitioning from playing bad guys to spies on the big screen.
The Kick-Ass 2 star explains, "For some reason I played bad guys for a while, for a few years. I don't quite know what's happened but now it's spies!
"I was a spy in Body of Lies, a film I did with Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio; he was the head of the Jordanian secret service. In Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy I was a spy. In The Imitation Game, that's coming out with Benedict Cumberbatch, I'm a spy. Secret Service that I'm doing with Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Firth, I'm another spy. I mean, it's unbelievable. I don't know quite what's happening but there's a whole spy thing going on."
Australian Olympian-turned-TV star Stephanie Rice was hospitalised during a vacation in the U.S. after she was struck down with appendicitis. The 26-year-old swimmer, who won three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was rushed to a medical facility in America last week (ends26Oct14) after suffering stomach pains, and she subsequently underwent emergency surgery.
In a post on her Instagram.com page, she wrote, "Not the ideal end to my U.S. trip but finally heading home. I went to hospital 3 days ago with stomach pains which turned out to be appendicitis, which needed emergency surgery. It was all a bit scary, more so being in a different country and not having anyone there but I was so overwhelmed with the support and generosity from my new american friends... Thank you for all your help... Now I can go home to mummy and daddy."
The Celebrity Apprentice Australia winner later posted another message assuring fans she had arrived back Down Under safely to begin her recuperation.
Actress Misty Upham has been laid to rest following a memorial service in Washington on Saturday (25Oct14). The August: Osage County star was reported missing earlier this month (Oct14) and her body was discovered in a ravine in Auburn, Washington on 16 October (14).
A funeral service was held at the Muckleshoot Pentecostal Church over the weekend, when Upham's friends and family members gathered to bid a final farewell to the tragic actress.
The 32 year old, who was a member of the Native American Blackfeet Tribe, was honoured with a traditional procession at the start of the ceremony, during which a slideshow of photos from Upham's short life was shown on a big screen.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has publicly pitched a buddy cop movie idea to Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in a bid to land a role opposite his wrestling hero. The 25 year old reveals he used to imitate wrestlers as a child to perfect his American accent and now he's become a movie star, he would love to team up with fighter-turned-actor The Rock, even though he openly admits they would make an unlikely pair onscreen.
Radcliffe has even come up with his own idea for a project he hopes the action man would be interested in.
During an appearance on America's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (28Oct14), he explained, "The Rock was always my favourite... and I harbour a not-so-secret desire to somehow find a part for me and Dwayne Johnson to play in the same movie...
"My initial thought was a buddy cop movie about two kind of unlikely partners who are forced to work together and then are bonded by... their love of music... (The film would be) called Siren Song, so we could pitch that (to Johnson)... Wouldn't you like to see me and The Rock do that?"
Turning to the camera, Radcliffe appealed directly to Johnson to get in touch, saying, "So The Rock, if you want to make (this film)...!"
And Radcliffe's enthusiasm for a joint project wouldn't be a surprise for Johnson, because he already knows how big a fan the Brit is of his days in the ring.
The actor added, "He knows I'm a fan 'cause I've had mutual friends who've dressed him on other films and stuff, so I actually have a T-shirt that one of them got him to make me... well they made it, he took the picture... but it's just a T-shirt with a picture of him holding up a sign saying, 'Dan Radcliffe, Number One Fan', which I have, I have that!"

He says, "I was making this Miles Davis film with Don (Cheadle) in Cincinnati, (Ohio) and I had to be in New York for something. So I thought..., 'I'll cross the States. I'll go to New York and drive to Cincinnati, make the movie with Don and then I'll drive back to (Los Angeles).'
"So then I was in Utah... and I was watching my gas gauge (go down)... So I pulled along to the side and I thought, 'Someone will come along and help.' So I find a bit of paper... and I write 'gas' with a big question mark and I sat on my car (holding up the sign) as... vehicles are going past me... Nobody stopped...
"(Finally) this lovely lady Madeline... came on a motorbike and saved me. She's a long distance motorcycle adventurer... We've stayed in touch, we're friends now..."
Rock 'n' roll veteran Jerry Lee Lewis has billionaire philanthropist Steve Bing to thank for his new lease of life after The Killer's famous superfan insisted on getting his hero the help he needed to overcome a bout of poor health. Doctors prescribed heavy medication when Lewis' back pain started becoming a huge issue a decade ago, but they put the Great Ball of Fire hitmaker into a fug of depression and even his closest friends and bandmates feared the worst.
When Big learned his hero was struggling, he stepped in to make sure he got the best help available.
The businessman also helped the rocker sort out his financial problems and fixed his teeth.
Lewis' longtime drummer Jim Keltner tells Rolling Stone, "He helped get Jerry Lee in a situation where he wasn't being given hard meds for various ailments."
The health intervention has given the 79 year old a new outlook on life and he has started recording with his band again for the first time in years.
Keltner adds, "I remember doing an... interview with him and his eyes were just spinning. You weren't seeing the real Jerry Lee."

"However, I understand the seriousness of this matter and ask that you respect the privacy of my family as we address this together... I would also like to thank my fans for their outpouring of love and support."
This isn't Fortune's first legal issue involving a family member - in 2002, he was charged with injury to child for burning his four-year-old stepson.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and completed a six-year deferred adjudication.
In 2012, a civil lawsuit was filed and subsequently dismissed.
