Celebrities including Panettiere's Nashville co-star Connie Britton, Robert Pattinson, Emily Blunt and Adam Sandler all recently took the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise cash and awareness for charity the ALS Association.
Three graffiti artists have launched a lawsuit in a bid to block the release of Terry Gilliam's new movie The Zero Theorem, alleging producers have copied their work.
Argentinian artists Franco Fasoli, known as 'Jaz', Nicolas Escalada, AKA 'Ever', and Canadian Derek Mehaffey, known as 'Other', accuse the film-makers of ripping off a huge mural they created in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They hold the copyright to the work, titled Castillo, which is one of the star attractions in the city's famous 'zona de graffiti' (street art zone), but in court papers filed in Illinois on Wednesday (13Aug14) they allege Gilliam's team copied it for the film. The trio insists a mural which features in The Zero Theorem is "a blatant misappropriation" of Castillo, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The lawsuit adds, "The Copyrighted Artwork has achieved international recognition in the art world, and is widely recognised by the public in Argentina and abroad. Castillo is so important that it is one of the few public artworks that have survived for years in that particular zona de graffiti." The three artists are suing Voltage Pictures, Amplify Releasing and other defendants. They are demanding an injunction on the movie, which is due for release next week (beg18Aug14), damages and costs.
Former Marillion frontman Fish is returning to the stage after postponing U.K. shows in May (14) to allow his guitarist Robin Boult to recover from illness. Fish, real name Derek Dick, will return to the spotlight when he officially reopens the Haddington Corn Exchange in England on 23 August (14). The singer has been involved in the extensive renovation of the venue in his adopted hometown.
Meanwhile, Fish has been nominated for two awards at the Progressive Music Awards 2014 (Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year for A Feast Of Consequences), which will be held in London on 11 September (14).
A music teacher who inspired Kate Nash to pursue a career as a singer has been jailed on child porn charges. Derek Berditch, 58, who taught the singer/songwriter at a school in Hertfordshire, England, pleaded guilty to possessing nearly 60,000 explicit photographs of children, as well as films and "extreme pornography".
The stash was discovered following a police raid on his home earlier this year (14) and he has now been jailed for 18 months. Berditch will also be listed on Britain's sex offenders register for 10 years.
During a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London on Tuesday (05Aug14), Judge Andrew Goymer told Berditch he is "unfit" to be a tutor, adding, "It is shameful for a teacher to engage in this kind of conduct, it damages public confidence in the profession and it undermines the trust of parents who allowed their children to be taught unsupervised."
Nash has previously sung the praises of her former music teacher, insisting he encouraged her to take her talents seriously, saying, "There was a very enthusiastic music teacher, Derek Berditch, at St Joan of Arc Catholic School. He just loved music. I remember lessons where he would ask if we had heard or seen something and if we said no he would scrap the lesson plan and we would watch Cabaret or listen to an album. He was a super music fan and encouraged us to join the choir and learn an instrument. I was lucky to have someone that really encouraged me... to be creative."
Glee star Chris Colfer's bestselling book series The Land Of Stories is set to hit the big screen - the actor is in talks with major movie executives about turning the tales into a new film.
The 24 year old tells Access Hollywood Live he always vowed not to consider movie deals connected to his young adult books, but now he's reconsidering.
Colfer says, "I'm starting to have those film conversations. I'm a little more open-minded to it. When I first started the series, I was completely against doing a movie... I always said I would rather it be a good book that a hundred people read, than an awful movie which a thousand people see."
"But the readers want to see the world come alive so much. Who am I to deny them of that?"
Fans of British rockers Iron Maiden have launched an online petition in a bid to urge the band to reinstate Derek Riggs as album artist. The graphic artist created the group's skeleton warrior Eddie the Head, who has appeared on every Maiden album since 1980, but he was replaced as the band's go-to cover art guy in the early 1990s, with Iron Maiden's manager Rod Smallwood explaining he wanted to "upgrade" the mascot.
In a 2013 interview, Riggs insisted he was replaced because his work was getting "more attention than the music, and it upset their (band's) ego".
He added, "They were going around the world telling everybody that it was all their ideas and I was just a dumb monkey that painted it all."
Now, a growing legion of Maiden fans are keen to get back to basics and they've signed a petition aimed at prompting the band to reinstate Riggs.
They write, "Many fans view his artwork to be as influential as the music Iron Maiden produces. Things haven't been the same since he stopped being Iron Maiden's exclusive artist, so we plead with the band to bring him back for any future artwork needs."
