The release of the new Kevin Kline and Dakota Fanning movie The Last Of Robin Hood will be bittersweet for writer/director Wash Westmoreland - because the woman he spent years tracking down and then persuading to let him adapt her love story didn't live to see it. After reading Tedd Thomey's book, The Big Love, about Beverly Aadland's romance with silver screen icon Errol Flynn in 2003, Westmoreland attempted to track down the forgotten actress and singer.
Thomey made the introductions and the director drove to Palmdale, California to meet the reclusive former socialite.
He tells WENN, "We really wanted to get in touch with Beverly but she was famously guarded about the story. We wrote a very nice letter and waited. A few weeks later we got a phone call from Mr. Delvin Irwin from Mississippi saying, 'I hear you want to talk to Woodsy,' which was Flynn's nickname for her; he (Delvin) was a Flynn fanatic who had made friends with Beverly and her husband Ron and was kind of acting as a gatekeeper.
"We met her in a Mexican restaurant and she came in with her husband. She was very friendly but didn't put all her cards on the table at first. It was personal to her and she felt very bruised about the way that the romance has been treated over the years. She resented her mother stealing her story and teaming up with Tedd Thomey for The Big Love."
But Westmoreland's research impressed Aadland and her husband - he even tracked down a recording of Beverly singing Some Say two months after Flynn died for the film - and she agreed to let him make the movie.
He adds, "That's actually a real Beverly Aadland song. We managed to get the rights and we got Ron and the couple's daughter in the audience for the cabaret scene, where Dakota (Fanning) performs.
"Ron, who is a salt of the earth American blue collar guy, was just incredibly moved and was in tears watching this. He was just incredibly proud and the only sadness was that Beverly couldn't be there. She died in 2010. We always promised her the film would get made but she never saw it on the big screen."
The movie also features a cameo from Sean Flynn, Errol's 23-year-old grandson.
Westmoreland explains, "He played the guy who Beverly goes off with in Cuba on the back of the motorbike. So Kevin (Kline), as Errol, gets to look out the window seeing them disappear off into a cloud of dust, where he's really looking at Errol Flynn's grandson taking his girl away!
"He (Sean Flynn) said, 'People of my age don't know who Errol Flynn is', and he never met him. So when he met Kevin Kline as Errol, he said, 'I feel like I finally met my own grandfather'."
Sin City creator Frank Milleris thrilled his 300 graphic novel has forced Iranians to rewrite history. The comic book, which inspired director Zack Snyder's cult film, landed Miller a lifetime ban from Iran after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called it "an act of cultural and psychological warfare".
But joking about his "fatwa" in a new Playboy interview, Miller admits he's happy the Iranians got upset about the book and film.
He explains, "What I love is that I actually made the Iranian government change its historical policy toward Persia. It went from despising the empire of Persia to all of a sudden loving it, after 300.
"Persia had been a globe-spanning empire, then Muhammad came along and changed the mentality and rewrote all the histories. Iran's days of empire are long gone, and they were just looking for something to get p**sed off about."
Rap Marion 'Suge' Knight has been hospitalised in Los Angeles after a star-studded party hosted by troubled singer Chris Brown and attended by Justin Bieber descended into chaos following a terrifying shooting. The Death Row Records co-founder was reportedly shot twice in the early hours of Sunday morning (24Aug14) during Brown's pre-party at the 1OAK nightclub ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards.
Reports suggest gunfire erupted in the venue and three people, including Knight, were injured. They were taken to the city's Cedars-Sinai hospital where one is believed to be in a critical condition.
Guests at the party are said to have included model/actor Tyson Beckford, Black Eyed Peas musician apl.de.ap and Bieber, who was pictured at the bash.
Brown is believed to have escaped uninjured, and was seen driving away from the venue in his sports car following the shooting.
The nature of Knight's injuries were not known as WENN went to press, but a report published on TMZ.com suggests the star was able to walk out of the nightclub unaided to seek assistance from police officers.
The area around the venue was sealed off by police, who are believed to have apprehended a suspect. A video which appears to show the chaos in the club at the time of the shooting has since appeared online.
Rocker Henry Rollins has issued a public apology for publishing a controversial article about suicide following the death of funnyman Robin Williams. The former Black Flag frontman sparked outrage by writing a divisive column titled 'F**k Suicide' for the L.A. Weekly newspaper.
In the essay, he criticised those who take their own life, including Williams, who killed himself earlier this month (Aug14) after a long battle with depression.
Rollins wrote of the star, "How in the hell could you possibly do that to your children? I don't care how well adjusted your kid might be, choosing to kill yourself, rather than to be there for that child, is every shade of awful, traumatic and confusing. I think as soon as you have children, you waive your right to take your own life."
However, Rollins has now issued an open letter, titled 'An Apology', through his website to say sorry for his comments.
He writes, "The article I wrote in the LA Weekly about suicide caused a lot of hurt... That I hurt anyone by what I said, and I did hurt many, disgusts me. It was not at all my intent but it most certainly was the result...
"I am not asking for a break from the caning, take me to the woodshed as much as you see fit. If what I said has caused you to be done with me, I get it... I am deeply sorry. Down to my marrow. I can't think that means anything to you, but I am. Completely sorry. It is not of my interest to hurt anyone but I know I did. Thank you for reading this."
