The stars, who played lovers in the hit drama, were recently rumoured to have started dating after they were spotted spending time together, but a representative for Garth denied the reports on Thursday (30Aug12).
Now the real reason for their regular meetings has emerged - the longtime pals are collaborating on a TV project.
A spokesperson for Garth tells website RumorFix.com, "They have been spending a lot of time together recently because the two are working on developing a TV sitcom together. It will be a multi-camera, half-hour show. Currently we have producers and writers and are meeting with networks."
The two old friends can also be seen in new TV ads for clothing firm Old Navy.
The actress and the couple's daughters moved out of Hollywood two years ago in preparation for the new show, A Little Bit Country, which features them coming to terms with country life - and she reveals Twilight star Facinelli was never going to be a part of the project.
The couple shocked fans last week (ends16Mar12) by announcing it had split, and now Garth reveals Facinelli will not be part of the new show, even though elements of their split will play into the drama on TV.
Appearing on U.S. news show Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday (20Mar12), the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star was coy about revealing just what parts of her personal problems will feature in the show, but stated, "I hope that people will tune in and find out."
The "country girl" from Illinois also insisted that she was happily married when she signed up for the show and had "no idea" she'd be dealing with a marriage split while filming the series - but she admits farm life is helping her deal with the break-up.
She said, "I grew up on a farm, so I need to get back to my roots for a while."
TWILIGHT actor PETER FACINELLI is putting in triple the work on his upcoming project EL CHICO BLANCO - he will star in and serve as co-producer on the drama, which he also wrote. The film chronicles the story of an outcast raised in a Spanish neighbourhood who rises to a position of power in a crime family, according to Daily Variety. Facinelli has become quite the in-demand screenwriter in recent years - he also penned new TV movie Accidentally in Love as a Valentine's Day gift to his actress wife Jennie Garth. The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress stars in the film with Marilu Henner.
The pair, along with other stars including Facinelli's wife Jennie Garth and actor Marlon Wayans, turned out to support the first annual story time celebration from Milk + Bookies, an organisation which teaches young children about the joys of reading.
Garner, who has two daughters with husband Ben Affleck, spent the day reading to children and shared the names of some of her favourite books with other guests.
Wayans says, "I learned to read on Dick and Jane books. Run, Dick, run. See Dick run. Stop Jane. Look at mom. None of that makes any literal sense at all but you learn words."
TV chiefs are desperately trying to keep the plot of the new Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off show under wraps.
Bosses at the CW Television Network have refused to release any footage of the new program ahead of its debut on September 2.
Critics have been banned from reviewing the show, with no advance screenings planned before it airs on TV.
A statement from CW reads, "The CW and our studio partner CBS Paramount Network Television have made the strategic marketing decision not to screen
90210 for any media in advance of its premiere.
"We're not hiding anything... simply keeping a lid on 90210 until 9.02, riding the curiosity and anticipation into premiere night, and letting all our
constituents see it at the same time."
The series has been hit by controversy in recent weeks with Tori Spelling quitting the project in an alleged row over her salary.
Other original stars, including Shannen Doherty and Jennie GarthBe, will both be reprising their roles for the new-look show.

Jennie Garth is "disappointed" her former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Tori Spelling won't be a part of the TV show's remake, and she's upset by reports that a salary feud was to blame for her pal's decision to quit.
Garth, who reprises her role as Kelly Taylor on the revamped 90210, was looking forward to working with Spelling again and was upset to hear the actress, who was set to return as Donna Martin, had quit the project.
She tells EW.com she's disappointed by online reports that Spelling dropped out of the new series after failing to land the payday Garth and Shannen Doherty were offered to reprise their characters from the original show.
Garth says, "The press thinks we're at war over salary with Tori. I didn't know I was at war with Tori.
"I'm really bummed because I love Tori and I was psyched Tori was going to be on the show. I think she should definitely get paid as much as either of us is getting paid.
"Her father created the show. It just seems wrong if that's the case. I don't know what really happened because I haven't talked to her. I would like to talk to her.
"I'll try to butt my head in whenever I can and tell people what I think about it."
Spelling reportedly quit the new show after she discovered Garth and Doherty had been offered double her salary.
But Doherty disputes the figures: "They didn't even get the numbers right, so I don't know if it's about the money either."

Actress Jennie Garth has confirmed she will return the new spinoff of Beverly Hills, 90210 after months of speculation.
The star fuelled rumors that she had agreed to star in the new show after she abruptly quit TV series My Best Friend's Girl last month.
Garth was slated to star in the pilot for the comedy, but walked away from the project at the last minute, prompting producers to replace her with Kristin Booth.
She is the first original character to be signed to appear in the remake--although former stars Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering have both spoken out about their ambitions to star in the new venture.
Garth will make special guest appearances on the show as her former character Kelly Taylor and will play a guidance counselor.
