Synopsis:
A dramatization of the true story of an explosion on the U.S.S. Iowa on April 19, 1989, which killed 47 sailors. Adapted from "60 Minutes" reporter Charles Thompson's story about U.S. Navy Lieutenant Dan Meyer's effort to debunk a cover-up story allegedly spun by U.S. Navy Captain Fred Moosally blaming two innocent sailors for the explosion. Initially, the Naval Investigative Service, through their preliminary investigation, alleged that the explosion was a murder/suicide perpetrated by a gunnersmate on duty in Turret Two. The reasoning was based on a determination that the sailor in question, Clayton Hartwig, was involved in a homosexual relationship with fellow Turret Two gunnersmate, Kendall Truitt, and that the relationship had gone awry. However, after a more detailed investigation, Sandia National Laboratory determined that the explosion was a result of technical and power munition design faults within the gunnery system itself.
