Synopsis:
Special based on the Scholastic book series that tells fictional stories about heroic young women during important periods in American history. Lucinda Lawrence and her family are living in Gonzalez, a Texas settlement of Americans, as war breaks out between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1830s. Lucinda's brother Willis joins the newly formed Texas army to oppose Mexico's forces at the Alamo. At the urging of Lucinda's mother, the Lawrence family relocates to San Antonio, where her brother Isaac and his Mexican wife Esparanza are awaiting the birth of their child. After the Texans defeat Mexico, everyone assumes the conflict is over. However, the Mexican forces renew the battle and Willis and Isaac must return to face almost certain death. Though Lucinda cannot believe her brother is gone, the birth of Esparanza's baby is a reminder of the cycle of life and death, and holds a promise of a better future.
