Synopsis:
In a village shrouded in myth and history, an ancient portrait of wealthy royalist Jonathan Lowrie is slashed in a local museum. Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and Sergeant Troy soon realize that there is more to the story than a vandalized portrait. The mystery and confusion escalate with a succession of supernatural occurrences in the museum and surrounding graveyard: bells ring, a bale of paper combusts, blood appears on the museum walls, ghostly apparitions are witnessed and ornaments smash to the ground. However, when a distant grandson of Jonathan Lowrie is found murdered in the museum beside his great-great-great-grandfather's grave, a story of reckless greed for silver and inheritance transpires. Among the suspects are: Ralph Bailey, who secretly lives beneath the museum; retired criminals; an ex-heroin addict; Tate, whose true identity is a mystery to all; and the demented Sandra.
