Synopsis:
Accompanied by his best friend and manager Tiny O'Toole, Charlie Davis prepares for the long drive from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, to Reno, Nevada, and his climb to fame in the boxing ring. Along the way, they pick up Gina, a wandering waif in search of herself who becomes Charlie's kindred spirit. Arriving in Reno, Gina finds a job as a waitress and Tiny introduces Charlie to Johnny Ticotin, a hard-bitten trainer. Johnny takes Charlie under his wing and soon his prowess in the ring comes to the attention of Alex Dumas, the self-indulgent promoter who controls the fight game in Reno. Charlie wins the title fight for Dumas, but his relationship with Tiny and Gina suffer as he excludes everyone and becomes seduced by the charmed life of a champ. Charlie's training regimen suffers and he finds himself out of shape for a match with an opponent who Dumas hopes will take the crown.
