Synopsis:
A live performance from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House of Richard Strauss's comic opera, set in Vienna in the 1740s, and describing the love triangle involving the young nobleman, Octavian, and his loves, the older Marschallin and the young Sophie. The brash Octavian is selected by his beloved Marschallin (a princess and the wife of the Austrian Field Marshall) to be the bearer of the customary silver rose on behalf of her cousin, the oafish Baron Ochs, who wishes to marry the young eligible Sophie, the daughter of the rich merchant Faninal. One look at the beautiful Sophie makes Octavian forget, at least for the moment, his older mistress and his duty as the cavalier of the rose.
