Synopsis:
On August 5, 1949, sixteen smokejumpers parachuted into Mann Gulch, Montana, to try to contain a forest fire. A chance combination of heat, wind and atmosphere conditions resulted in a "blow-up," a lethal fireball that killed all but three of them. Using reenactments, computer models and eyewitness reports by survivors, the program recounts the event of that fateful day and how the tragedy at Mann Gulch changed forest fire-fighting methods forever.
