Synopsis:
Television movie based on the novels of C.S. Forester about the exploits of British Naval Captain Horatio Hornblower at the beginning of the 19th century. When Horatio Hornblower boards the "Justinian," Midshipman Jack Simpson beats him up, accuses him of cheating at cards, challenges him to a duel and kills a midshipman who takes Hornblower's place, unbeknownst to Hornblower. When the war against France intensifies, Hornblower is transferred to the frigate "Indefatigable," where he meets his mentor, Captain Sir Edward Pellew. Hornblower is given his first command -- to sail the captured "Marie Gallante" to any port in England. But things go horribly wrong and Hornblower, his division and the French prisoners end up adrift at sea. Yet Hornblower's resourcefulness saves the day and soon they are picked up by the "Indefatigable." When they are fired on by a French Frigate, the "Indy" gives chase. They come upon the damaged "Justinian" and rescue survivors including Midshipman Jack Simpson.
