Jazz (2001)

Part 1, "Gumbo," focuses on the beginnings of Jazz, born in the unique musical and social cauldron of New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century, emerging from several forms of music, including ragtime, marching bands, work songs, spirituals, European Classical music, funeral parade music and, the blues.

Part 2, "The Gift," focuses on the years 1917 to 1924, the tumultuous era known as the "Jazz Age," when the rhythms and spirit of jazz music mirror the world that emerged in the wake of World War I.

Part 3, "Our Language," focuses on the years 1924 to 1928, when Louis Armstrong arrives in New York from Chicago where, during a brief stay with the Fletcher Henderson band, he amazes his fellow musicians and teaches the city to swing. A blues craze takes the nation by storm.

Part 4, "The True Welcome," focuses on the years 1929 to 1935.

Part 5, "Swing: Pure Pleasure," focuses on the years 1935 to 1937.

Part 6, "Swing: The Velocity of Celebration," focuses on the years 1937 to 1939.

Part 7, "Dedicated to Chaos," focuses on the years 1940 to 1945.

Part 8, "Risk," focuses on the years 1945 to 1955.

Part 9, "The Adventure," focuses on the years 1955 to 1960.

Part 10, "A Masterpiece By Midnight," focuses on the years 1961 to the present.
