Synopsis:
Jessica Fletcher attends a lecture in Virginia given by Dr. Cassandra Hawkins about the murder of a white plantation owner on his wedding night in the 1860s. While at the lecture, Jessica learns that her distant aunt, Sarah McCullough, owned a slave named Sam Pinckney and that he may have been unjustly accused of the crime. Curious about the situation, Jessica and Cassandra set out to investigate the details of the murder. During their search, the women uncover several personal historical letters from the McCullough estate that support their suspicions that Samuel may have been innocent. They also discover that the evidence condemning him is only circumstantial. In a flashback, a mob assembles to lynch Sam, but Sarah insists that the town sheriff intervene. She also launches her own investigation during which she discovers that several wedding guests had motives for the murder.
