Synopsis:
The story of Tess Durbeyfield, a poor young woman urged by her impoverished father to take service with a family he believes are her wealthy relatives; the D'Urbervilles. There she meets the son of the house, Alec, who relentlessy pursues and overpowers her. She flees the estate and returns home only to discover she is pregnant. The child dies in infancy but Tess's life is changed forever. She finds work on a farm where she meets and falls in love with Angel Clare. On their wedding night she reveals her past, and Clare leaves her. Tess again seeks work in the countryside of 19th century England where she again encounters Alec. Tess is cold, afraid and desperate and agrees to live with Alec, but Angel Clare returns to profess his true love.
