Synopsis:
In a rural area of England filled with eccentric people, bizarre crimes are unearthed by Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby. Comfortably married and father of a college-age daughter, Inspector Barnaby is contemplative and slow to anger but his dark sense of humor can be caustic. Barnaby has an uneasy alliance with Sergeant Troy, his younger, slower, racist, homophobic and chauvinistic assistant. When an old lady witnesses a shocking event, she dies from seemingly natural causes before she can tell anyone what she has seen. Her dearest friend drags the unwilling Inspector Barnaby into the case. Soon he begins to see that certain things just don't add up and then a second gruesome killing occurs. Barnaby's investigations into the murders reveal an unexpected sordid side to the sleepy village -- a possible blackmail ring.
