Synopsis:
A presentation of the Washington Opera production of Jules Massenet's 1885 French opera "Le Cid" from the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington DC. "Le Cid" tells the story of the 11th century Spanish hero El Cid (Rodrigue), who in Massenet's opera must fight to save his country -- and his life. Bound by honor to avenge his father, Rodrigue reluctantly duels and kills the father of Chimene, his fiancee. Chimene, overcome with grief, demands her own vengeance from the king, but the Moors have declared war and Le Cid is needed to defend the outmanned Spain against the onslaught. Ever honorable, Le Cid pledges that, should he live, he will return to face whatever punishment Chimene deems appropriate. Weighing her love for Rodrigue against her family's honor, she tells Le Cid that if he saves Spain, she will pardon him -- but will she?
