Synopsis:
Dramatization of the life of eccentric heiress Doris Duke who, at the age of thirteen, inherited $100 million from her tobacco millionaire father Buck Duke. The bond between Doris and her father was powerful but he taught Doris that she could trust no one. Her mother Nanaline rejected Doris from the moment she was born, leaving Doris to yearn for true acceptance and love, the things that money could not buy. Doris Duke's story is told in flashback from her deathbed where she remained under the care of her butler Bernard Lafferty. She looks back on her work as a war-time journalist; her romance with infamous Latino Porfirio Rubirosa; her relationship with Louis Bromfield, the love of her life; her romance with Hawaiian Olympic champion Duke Kahanamoku and the death of their baby girl; and her relationship with Chandi Heffner, a young woman who temporarily replaces the daughter Doris lost.
