Alt-J Goes Ghostly and Slo-Mo for Jimmy Fallon

Although Alt-J’s Mercury Prize-winning debut album An Awesome Wave came out in the states last September, the British quartet is still trending. Regular stateside touring has steadily increased their fanbase; in my hometown of Boston, they’ve gone from playing the tiny Brighton Music Hall to headlining the 5000-seat Pavilion in less than a year. They’ve even landed the ultimate modern-day accolade for a breaking indie band, landing their song “Fitzpleasure” in a mobile phone ad. Not bad for a band whose first indie single came out less than two years ago. Check out this ghostly, slow-motion version of their single “Tessellate” from September 12’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Btw: Alt-J is the keystroke that, on a Mac, gives you the Greek letter Delta, or Δ. Their early UK releases featured only this symbol in place of a name, a conceit that was dropped with the American release of An Awesome Wave. As Joe Newman sings here, “Triangles are my favorite shape.”
