Before auditioning, superstar hopefuls should consider the following (this list is not intended to be the comprehensive list of rules/regulations):

Participants must be legal US residents and eligible to work in the United States.
Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 24 by/on October 19, 2002; those under the age of 18 must be accompanied to the audition by a parent or legal guardian.
Proof of age and a picture ID (eg, a birth certificate and a driver’s license, a passport, etc.) must be presented at the audition.
Participants are ineligible if they already have either talent representation or a recording contract or were among the top 30 finalists of American Idol: The Search For A Superstar.
Auditioners should be prepared to sing a capella (without music) songs of their choice. One song must be selected from a list that will be provided by audition personnel. The second song, if requested by audition personnel, may be a song of the participant’s choice.
For those selected to continue in the audition process, follow-ups will occur within five days (participants should be prepared to stay in audition city five days following first audition). In addition, participants must be able to come to Los Angeles on the dates required.
Before auditioning, individuals must complete, sign and agree to various required forms. Those selected to continue will have to sign and agree to additional forms. The forms will be available at the audition venues in each city, but are available to print out and review at www.idolonfox.com. Participants under 18 must co-sign each form with a parent or legal guardian.
During the process, the panel of judges will evaluate each individual on talent, ability, look and style.

After premiering on Fox in June of 2002, American Idol: The Search for a Superstar consistently won its time period among the key demographics. On Sept. 4, Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first American Idol and has seen her RCA Records single debut “Before Your Love/A Moment Like This” jump from No. 52 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it the largest leap to the No. 1 position in Billboard’s Hot 100 history.
