DS Mack Stone can't understand why his wife has left him unexpectedly and has seemingly gone missing. When he begins combing through photos of missing people, he stumbles across the photo of Paul West, a man who he remembers went missing after his wife's accidental death in a fire. Stone begins to believe West's identity is actually that of John Dean, who years ago showed up at a hospital at which time he claimed to have no memory. Stone becomes determined to prove that West plotted his wife's death, but as he probes West for information about the deadly fire, the tables are turned and West begins to question Stone about his own wife's disappearance. Suddenly the case that seemed so clear-cut to Stone may not be so clear after all, and he isn't sure that he himself isn't in fact the murderer as the line between truth and memory soon begins to blur.
