BET’s ‘Being Mary Jane’ to End in 2018

Gabrielle Union’s Being Mary Jane TV series is coming to an end next year (18).

Gabrielle has starred as TV news anchor Mary Jane Paul in the show since 2013. The series’ fourth season wrapped in September (17).

Being Mary Jane has been a landmark series not only for BET, but for African-American women around the world, who saw themselves in Mary Jane, her family, friends and co-workers,” a statement from BET Networks head of programming Connie Orlando reads. “From the captivating storytelling, to the richly complex characters, to the powerful issues tackled on the series, we remain immensely proud.

“We are grateful to the cast and creators of Being Mary Jane, who have worked tirelessly to bring this world to vivid life over the past 4 seasons. We also thank the many loyal viewers whose hearts and minds were captured every week, and kept Mary Jane trending worldwide. We look forward to closing out Mary Jane’s journey with a series finale that is sure to blow fans away!”

The news comes almost a year after Union settled a contract dispute with BET TV bosses. She filed a suit against the network executives in October, 2016 for breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation, claiming they were attempting to “fraudulently extend the term” of her contract by shooting 20 episodes of the series back-to-back, instead of the agreed-upon 13 episodes per season.

The actress was seeking at least $3 million in general damages and a declaration that BET could not order more than 13 episodes for any season of Being Mary Jane. The two parties reached an undisclosed settlement in December (16).
