Ben Silverman, Sofia Vergara To Produce ABC Comedy

ALT TEXTBen Silverman is venturing back to the television world.

The former co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Emmy-winning producer of shows like The Office and Ugly Betty is teaming up with Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara to bring a single-camera comedy based on the popular Spanish series Aquí no hay quien viva (loose translation: I Hate This Place). Craig Doyle is set to write the adaptation.

The show is a multi-cultural and multi-generational comedy is in the same vein as the Emmy-winning Modern Family, except for one tiny detail: it is set in an apartment building. It’s about a father-son landlord team who must manage the oddball tenants of their apartment complex. The original series ran from 2003-06.

The premise of this comedy seems promising. After all, single-camera comedies are all the rage now (Modern Family, The Office, Community) and Silverman knows how to produce these kinds of shows (as evidenced by his awards count). It’s also interesting to see Vergara take on a producer role. After her Emmy nomination for Modern Family, she seems to be taking charge of her career. Since becoming America’s favorite Latina, she’s worked on next summer’s Smurfs movie and Warner Bros. highly anticipated Happy Feet 2. As long as she continues to churn out work at the pace she has been, we can continue writing about her and, of course, linking to this gif.
