The Best Quotes About Love And Relationships From ‘Scandal’

Scandal, Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn
ABC
There’s so much to learn from Shonda Rhimes’s brilliant ABC series Scandal. Not all killers are bad people. Olivia Pope is everything. And American politics is a pretty scandalous enterprise. And considering all of the love triangles and madness therein, there’s plenty to learn about love and relationships. Here are some of the best quotes from the show, now in the midst of a pretty amazing third season.Fitz: “What kind of a coward was I to marry her and not wait for you?”

Yes, he’s cheating on his wife. Yes, Olivia is — technically speaking — his mistress. But Fitz proved that their relationship was going to be way more complicated than that when, in season one, he confessed his feelings for Liv with this epic line.

Olivia: “I am not a toy you can play with when you’re bored or lonely or horny. I am not the girl the guy gets at the end of the movie. I am not a fantasy. If you want me, Earn me!”

Ladies everywhere have vowed to live by this rant, which Olivia practically spat out at the President in the Oval Office. Fitz may think he’s kind of a big deal, but even the President has to show and prove when it comes to love.

Cyrus: “I’ve moved Heaven and Earth to save you from yourselves. I have lied for you. I have stolen for you. I have cheated for you. I have killed for you. I have almost died for you. And you, you two are so stupid and romantic and high on your own doomed love, Romeo and Juliet, Dear Diary nonsense that you won’t even save your own lives, but I am being dramatic? Romeo & Juliet were teenagers and they died! … This is not a romance novel. Life is not a romance novel!”

Poor Cyrus. He’d had it with Olivia and Fitz (as many of us had by the end of season two) and kinda had to put Liv in her place. We all love a good romance novel, but Cyrus teaches us that there has to be a point when you acknowledge that reality is a little different. And since Romeo and Juliet was actually a tragedy,  maybe those two aren’t the couple we should all be turning to for lessons in love.

Mellie: “It hurts until it doesn’t. You think it’s going to break you, but it won’t. You may not sleep as well at night, but you will be fine. Numb, but numb and fine are the same.”

This season Cyrus got the shock of his life when he discovered proof that James had cheated on him. He get a bit of advice from the one woman who warned him of what could happen if he mixed politics with his personal life.

Charlie: “Think of it as a relationship, except I’ll actually listen to what you have to say.”

Oh, Charlie from B6-13. In an attempt to get Quinn comfortable with the idea of being a total Gladiator traitor (Gladi-traitor?), he tells her to pretend that they’re dating. Except he’ll be listening to her. Nice.

Olivia: “My whole life is you. I can’t breathe because I’m waiting for you. You own me. You control me. I belong to you.”

See? This is why Cyrus got so angry. Who can deal with Olivia and Fitz not breathing for the sake of love and being all tragic and destined and dramatic? Well, the truth is, we kind of love it. We’d love to see them get it together so they could be in an actual healthy, adult relationship… but then Scandal would probably become a completely different show.
