After moving away from the big city in search of a more peaceful life, a police officer and his wife are camping out in the woods when his wife is brutally attacked. On the way to the hospital, the dazed wife points an accusing finger at a man they pass. The police officer attacks the man, leaving him barely alive. Once in the local town, the injured wife accuses someone else of the crime and the police officer realizes that he has made a horrible mistake. He is ready to confess his mistake to the sheriff, when the dead body of the man he beat up is brought to the hospital. To make matters worse, the dead man is the sheriff's son. The police officer and the sheriff together investigate the murder, with the police officer concealing his run-in with the dead son. Eventually, the police officer realizes that he did not kill the son, but the sheriff is closing in on his secret.
