The body of late British broadcaster Alistair Cooke was surgically plundered for body parts after his death last year, an investigation has found.
The Emmy-winning journalist, who spent most of his career in America, died in New York in March 2004 from lung cancer at the age of 95.
Cooke‘s family were informed of the macabre news last week following an investigation by the Brooklyn District Attorney, who discovered parts of Cooke‘s remains had been stolen in the funeral home last year by a crime ring, who sell body parts for transplant procedure.
His daughter Susan Cooke Kittredge laments, “At this point, we’re just reeling. It’s so horrific on so many fronts.
“Alistair Cooke‘s family is shocked and saddened by the news that following his death, parts of his body were illegally sold for transplant.”
The investigation has found Florida firm, Regeneration Technologies, and New Jersey’s Tutogen Medical, purchased parts of Mr. Cooke‘s bones—which had been surgically removed from his body before he was cremated—after receiving false paperwork, claiming the broadcaster was 85 and had died from a heart attack.
