Things aren’t looking too good for Westeros’ Dowager Queen, Cersei Lannister. Not only is the High Sparrow after her, her son King Tommen has decided to outlaw trials by combat. Cersei thought revenge was just within her grasp. However, now that The Mountain can’t stand in for her during her trial, it looks like things might take a very bad turn.
Reddit user Redough has suggested that Cersei is well on her way to becoming the “Mad Queen” in the same way that King Aerys II Targaryen was labeled the “Mad King”. If you recall, this is the same dude who became obsessed with watching people burn. Now before you get all up in arms, if you consider Cersei’s storyline up until this point, this actually makes a ton of sense.
Back in the first episode of season five, we saw Maggy the Frog give a young Cersei her prophecy. Back in the day, Cersei was under the impression that she was going to marry Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. However, Maggy politely corrects her and tells her that she will marry a King.
This turns out to be true because Cersei does marry King Robert Baratheon. Cersei also asks Maggy if she will be Queen. Maggy says yes, but only until a younger woman comes in a takes everything from her.
Cue Margaery Tyrell.
Cersei was the reason, Margaery and her brother Loras were imprisoned by the High Sparrow in the first place. However, it seems like Margery has been able to use her wits to begin manipulating the High Sparrow and Tommen. (At least that’s what we hope is happening)
Back to the prophecy.
Cersei asks Maggy the Frog is she will bear the king’s children. Maggy tells her no. She tells Cersei that the King will have 20 children, but she will only have 3 children. (Cersei has Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen.) If you’re a fan of the show then you know that all of Cersei’s children are fathered by her twin brother Jamie. Maggy also tells Cersei that all of her children will die. Mycrella and Joffrey have already kicked the bucket, so if this prophecy continues to play out then Tommen is next on the hit list.
If Cersei looses at her trial and if Tommen dies, she will literally have nothing left. After all, we now know there will be no Cleganbowl. Redough suggests,”If Cersei looses Cleganebowl that could set her off and make it her mission to destroy King’s Landing. One of the ways she can do this is using wildfire. King Aerys, the Mad King, threatened to burn down the city and wildfire was his way of doing it. Aerys’s wildfire bomb didn’t go off because Jamie stopped him. With this being said the bomb is lost in the city. Cersei knows about the wildfire and has the pyromancer produce more and more of it. If Cersei just loses it she has the power to destroy the city.”
In the second season of GoT, Tyrion uses wildfire in the Battle of the Blackwater. We also know that there is a great deal of it stored in the passages underneath the Iron Throne. Also during that same season, Daenerys Targaryen has a vision of a torched throne room. Could this be a prediction for the future? Or was it simply one of the past?
Finally, we think that the last bit of Maggy the Frog’s prophecy is the most interesting. She says,
“And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”
In High Valyrian the valonqar means “little brother”. We’ve always thought that this referred to Tyrion, but it could also refer to Jamie. The Kingslayer killed the Mad King because of this very same thing. Could the one person who swore his love to Cersei be the one who takes her out?
