Back in 1975, there was a show called The Gong Show. Amateur talent would compete against each other, and try to make sure the judges didn’t gong them before they finished. The judges then rate the un-gonged talent, and the one with the most points win a prize at the end. The show was fun and brought some talent that normally people wouldn’t care to watch. Now in 2017, it’s being rehashed, and after watching the first episode, you’re not going to want to miss this.
Each week the panel of judges will change, but the host won’t for the first week the judges include Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, and Ken Jeong. In the above clip, the host Tommy Maitland introduces the judges lovingly. If the host looks familiar, that’s only because it’s Mike Myers (so good to see him back).
Acts will be weird. In this first “talent” clip, we see one of the weirdest acts of the night. Mary comes out to sing Mary has a little bug. This bug can sing in a way you wouldn’t think possible.
The next contestant is Married with Bananas, and no, they don’t do what you think they will do. It’s even grosser but highly entertaining.
Lastly is a singing duo of Asians who have a song about why they shouldn’t be gonged.
The full first episode of The Gong Show airs Thursday, June 22, 2017, at 10/9c on ABC.
