Chuck Lorre Gets Dramatic in New Warner Brothers Deal

Chuck Lorre“Four more years!” isn’t just being screamed from the floor of the Democratic National Convention: it also echoes down the halls of Warner Brothers Television. And today, they got what they wanted: the folks at WB have signed Chuck Lorre to an extension of his contract with the group that includes lots of new options for one of their heaviest hitters.

According to Deadline, Lorre’s new new development and production deal includes an option for feature films that would write, develop and/or direct for Warner Brother on the Pictures side. His main focus will, of course, remain television–where he is the executive producer on the hit shows Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the deal is the plan for Lorre to expand into the world of drama series in addition to new comedies.

But the bigger question is: what in the world would a Chuck Lorre-written drama look like? How would that work? And of course: do we want that from Lorre? It’s a lot to consider, especially when you think about Lorre’s work and strength in the comedy field.

Fans of Lorre’s work will also recall that he executive produced Dharma & Greg, Grace Under Fire and Cybill in the nineties, so something female-fronted seems likely. But what else? Given his predilection for blue-collar scenarios, we imagine Lorre would focus on a working class family or neighborhood’s hardships, but with a semi-comedic bent (dramadies are real, you guys). Could a Desperate Housewives-esque crime procedural about an undercover lady copy trying to juggle her identity as a mother and wife with the duties of her top-secret job be in our future? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: Chuck Lorre will not be off television any time soon.

What do you think a Lorre-backed drama would look like? Are you excited about his expansion? Sound off in the comments!
