When the family takes Erma Jean to Chicago to visit doctors about her voice, they decide to move there in hope of a better life. One day, a riot breaks out at the beach, and Nellie Lee is caught up in the turmoil. To save her sister, Erma Jean breaks her silence. Once she has recovered her voice, Erma Jean is able to share Uncle Pace's final words with the rest of the family.
