Synopsis

Detective Supervisor Andy Dalziel is amazed to find himself at the center of an armed siege when he pays a visit to Stella, the landlady of a quiet village pub. The siege is by Stella's husband Frank, a veteran of the Falklands war. Stella and Frank's marriage is falling apart, and Frank is holding Dalziel and other customers hostage, as he attempts to find out with whom his wife has been unfaithful. The police, including Pascoe, surround the pub, but no one knows that Dalziel is one of the hostages. Maybe Frank's old army mate, Aneurin, will help calm Frank down. But if that fails, how will Dalziel and the others escape -- and how will Frank react when he discovers that the off-duty Dalziel is a policeman with a soft spot for his wife?
