Dead Man's Eleven | 1999
The tranquil village of Fletcher's Cross becomes embroiled in a web of blackmail and murder. A rich businessman's wife is found bludgeoned to death by a cricket bat. The victim had no apparent enemies but her husband was hated by everyone, including his archenemy whose partner was killed in a quarry explosion; his son who was outraged when his father announced he planned to sell the estate; and the sly spinster who abhorred the plans to fence off footpaths crossing the husband's land. It doesn't take long for Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby to discover that the victim was found dead in the same quarry as a fatal blast nine years earlier and where a previous housekeeper was killed. As Barnaby gets to work, another murder victim turns up, slumped forward on his desk with one of the husband's knives in his neck. After a confusing series of blackmail notes, bank notes and faulty alibis, Barnaby succeeds in uncovering the connection, and ultimately the truth, behind the the deaths.
