Hollywood’s only famous screenwriter, Diablo Cody, has sold a new pilot to Fox. Details about the comedy, called The Breadwinner, are being kept under wraps, but it’s safe to assume that the show will be a quirky take on suburban life, populated by eccentric characters who speak like twelve year olds who’ve watched too many episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Or it will be about someone who enters bakery raffles. Fox has signed a “put-pilot” deal for the project, which guarantees that the pilot will be shot and aired, or the studio will face penalties. Cody will executive produce the show with her Juno partner, Mason Novick, and Warner Bros will produce.
This has been a good week for the Juno screenwriter, whose stalker comedy Young Adult picked up a director and lead actress yesterday. The Breadwinner will be Cody’s second foray into television; she created Golden-Globe winning comedy United States Of Tara for Steven Spielberg. As The Breadwinner will be Cody’s first program on network TV (Tara airs on Showtime), she may have to learn to sheath her pork-sword references, in order to avoid the wrath of the FCC.
