Is ‘Doctor Who’ Losing Its Doctor? Matt Smith to Exit After Christmas — Report

Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who

This holiday season may not be very merry for fans of Doctor Who as its star, Matt Smith, could be calling it quits after four years, UK paper The Sun reports.

According to The Sun, Smith spoke of his future on Doctor Who with UK talk show host Jonathan Ross. “I’m very happy doing it. I mean, I go and I do the anniversary special, then I go away for a bit, and then I come back and we do the Christmas special. And it’s sort of one of those jobs where you have to take it year by year, really, because it’s 10 months a year, it’s all consuming,” Smith said.

He continued, “So, I don’t think you can plan sort of five, six years ahead, or even two years ahead. So it’s a year-by-year thing and at the moment. It’s 2013 and we will see what 2014 holds.”

While Smith’s comments on the topic were coy, The Sun quotes insider sources (which are ever so reliable) as saying, “Matt has told bosses he wants to bow out at Christmas.” And with his contract up in November, the timing does seem to add up.

The BBC, meanwhile, said in a statement to The Sun, “Sorry folks but even we don’t know what’s going to happen at Christmas. It’s not been written yet! But Matt loves the show and is to start filming the unmissable 50th anniversary, and the new series starting on Easter Saturday.”

Smith’s future on Doctor Who, at least for now, will remain a mystery. Would you be sad to see him go? Sound off in the comments!
