Downfall star Bruno Ganz dead

Downfall star Bruno Ganz has died.
The Swiss actor, who played Adolf Hitler in the critically-acclaimed 2004 film, passed away at his home in Zurich on Friday (15Feb19), his management announced. He was 77.
It has been reported that Ganz was battling colon cancer.
Ganz also had roles in Hollywood films including The Reader in 2008, alongside Kate Winslet, and 2004’s remake of the political thriller, The Manchurian Candidate. He was also well-known in German-language cinema and theatre.
His most famous role was as Hitler in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s drama, which followed the Nazi dictator’s final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of World War Two.
It grossed more than $92 million (£71.3m) at the worldwide box office when it was released, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
He also appeared in The Boys from Brazil in 1978, which starred Laurence Olivier, and in 2008’s The Baader Meinhof Complex. Ganz’s final role was in Lars von Trier’s The House that Jack Built last year (18).
According to the BBC, at the time of his death, Ganz was the holder of the Iffland-Ring, an accolade given to the German-speaking actor who was judged “most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre” by the previous owner, Josef Meinrad.
