Ellen Pompeo Is Game For More Time on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Ellem Pompeo Meredith and Derek Greys AnatomyThere’s been a great deal of chatter about what will happen to Grey’s Anatomy fans’ favorite on-again-off-again medical couple, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) when the actors’ contracts run up at the end of Season 8. Dempsey went on record to Vanity Fair, saying, “I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done.” Well, apparently Dempsey was a little confused because both Shonda Rhimes and Pompeo are staying mum on the true fate of the beloved characters. Basically, everything just got a whole lot murkier.

Pompeo previously hinted that she’d be likely to let her contract end so that Chyler Leigh, who plays her sister, could take the spotlight, but now Pompeo’s singing a different tune. She says that she’s yet to be offered a renewal on her soon-expired contract, so she’s not holding her breath, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to throw in her pretty blue scrubs. “I would never turn up my nose at Grey’s…If I hear from the fans that they want us to keep going, then I would continue because we owe them everything,” she told TV Guide. She also mentioned the possibility that costar Sandra Oh, whose contract is also up after Season 8, could leave and that it would make things a lot more interesting for Meredith. Of course, that’s all just the actress’ own speculation.

Something tells me Meredith with no Cristina would be upsetting but that Meredith with no Derek is probably even less appealing to fans, but Rhimes of course has something to assuage — or maybe just dull — those fears. She proposes that when Dempsey said he was done, what he meant was, “He was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season and we have no idea what the future holds.” Well, thanks for further confusion, Ms. Rhimes.

Now all we know is that everything we know could be wrong and that come season finale time, there will be potential for some serious cast shake-ups…or everyone will just stay on the show. Basically, we now know that we know nothing. Well, isn’t that special?

Celebrity Editor Kelsea Stahler was born in a pile of dirt. Okay, she was actually born in an old Naval hospital in San Diego, which then became a pile of dirt and remained as such for a number of years before becoming a parking lot perfectly sized for circus tents, and finally a museum. She eventually left San Diego to attend New York University, where she studied Journalism and English literature — two less-than profitable liberal arts degrees about which guidance counselors warned her. Against all odds, she now resides in Brooklyn, where she fights the constant fear that the locals will soon discover she isn’t quite cool enough to live there, and makes a living writing absurd, pop culture features about Batman, zombies, vampires, funny people, and Ron Swanson.
