There were some heavy hitters in the Outstanding Drama category this year, but newcomer Homeland took home the big award — Showtime’s first top prize ever.
The newcomer domination continued with Claire Danes picking up her first Emmy for a series on Homeland, but her second overall (she previously won in 2010 for the HBO TV movie Temple Grandin). Homeland leading man Damian Lewis also walked away with an Emmy for Outstanding Actor, his second nomination (previously highlighted for 2002’s Band of Brothers) and first win.
Aaron Paul won his second Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama for the fourth season of Breaking Bad, beating out fellow costar Giancarlo Esposito. The 78-year-old British actress Maggie Smith picked up a Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Mini-Series for Downton Abbey at last year’s, but this year, gets the bump up to take home the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama award.
Homeland also picked up the Outstanding Writing in Drama award for its pilot (the show returns on Showtime this Fall). Tim Van Patten picked up the award for Outstanding Directing on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.
