Marvel recently announced Iron Fist as their next series and it will be coming to Netflix on March 17, 2017. Following the other Netflix Marvel heroes, Iron Fist will join Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage as the fourth member in a forthcoming series called The Defenders. However, Iron Fist may not be as popular as Daredevil and may leave a few folks scratching their heads wondering just who this guy is. No worries! We’ll quickly cover everything from the origins of Iron Fist and anything else you’ll need to know about the Super Kung Fu Master.
Who is Iron Fist?
Iron Fist’s real name is Danny Rand and is a practitioner of martial arts and the wielder of a mystical force known as the Iron Fist. It is also important to note that he is in fact not Asian in the comics nor will he be in the show. He is a wealthy white guy with a tragic childhood who visited the mystic city of K’un-Lun to learn Kung Fu. On the Netflix series, he is played by Finn Jones aka Ser Loras from Game of Thrones.
The son of Wendell Rand and Heather Duncun, Danny Rand went on a trip to Tibet with his parents to search for the mystical city of K’un L’un which materialized in the Himalayas once a decade. Unfortunately, there was an accident that caused Danny’s father to fall to his death and left Danny with only his mother. Tragedy struck again when were attacked by wolves and his mother sacrificed herself to save Danny. A group of archers attempted to save them both but was ultimately only able to save Danny and took him in.
Becoming Iron Fist
For the next ten years, Danny trained on K’un L’un to become a Kung Fu master and proved to be the most gifted student. At the age of 19, he fought and defeated a dragon named Shou-Lao the Undying who guarded the power of the Iron Fist. It was during this battle that Danny burned a tattoo of a dragon on his chest. After Danny killed the Shou-Lao, he thrusted his fists into the dragon’s molten heart and emerged with the power of the Iron Fist.
Powers and Abilities
Danny Rand possesses the power of the Iron Fist which allows him to summon and focus his chi and enhance his abilities to superhuman levels. His strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes, and senses are all pushed to extraordinary heights. His signature ability to concentrate glowing energy into his hand and allows him to strike with superhuman impact.
He can also focus his chi to heal himself or others of injury.
Relationships with other Marvel characters.
Iron Fist and Daredevil are good friends in the comics and Iron Fist once took up the mantle of Daredevil during the Civil War arc. When Matt Murdock was exposed as Daredevil, Danny dressed as Daredevil to help give the illusion that Murdock and Daredevil were two separate people.
Luke Cage and Iron Fist are total bros in the comics. Hopefully, their bromance will come into play when they meet in The Defenders.
As for Misty Knight, Iron Fist has had an on and off relationship with her throughout the comics. Although Misty appears in Luke Cage, it is unclear if their romantic relationship will come up in The Defenders.
