Sunday night’s second-season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones set an all-time record for the series, whose viewers clearly weren’t tempted by the overlapping MTV Movie Awards.
The episode, “Valar Morghulis,” was watched by an astonishing 4.2 million people, over a million more than tuned in for the Season 1 finale. It was also the first time the Emmy-nominated drama had even crossed the four-million-viewer threshold. But the series has been working towards these numbers all season, with each episode hovering just below the four-million mark.
The numbers get even more interesting when compared to those of some of GoT’s high-profile network-mates: The two shows that follow it, Veep and Girls, respectively, average under a million viewers and have only netted more than a million twice, combined. the pilot episode for the big-budget Boardwalk Empire earned almost five million viewers at the outset, but it now trails GoT by a considerable margin; and HBO’s most addicting series, True Blood, is regularly watched by more than five million people. But it shouldn’t be too long before Thrones, which is (obviously!) coming back for a third season hits those numbers too.
