Synopsis

Oswald Alving has returned from Paris to his mother's estate in Norway. An orphanage is to be dedicated to his father, the late Captain Alving. Pastor Manders, Mrs. Alving's old friend, has arrived to supervise final arrangements. The carpenter, Jacob Engstrand, wants his daughter Regina, Mrs. Alving's maid, to help him run a brothel for sailors but she refuses. Pastor Manders, shocked by Oswald's liberal views since he returned from Paris, sets in motion a series of revelations -- Captain Alving was a drunkard and an adulterer and Regina is his illegitimate daughter. Oswald is overheard making a pass at Regina then reveals to his mother that he is suffering from syphilis, Mrs. Alving is about to tell him that Regina is his half-sister when the orphanage catches fire and burns to the ground. When Mrs. Alving finally tells Regina and Oswald the truth, Regina leaves town. Oswald, descending into the final stages of syphilis, begs his mother to put an end to his life by giving him morphine tablets.
