Victor Garber Was Will’s Dad
Way back in the early days of 'Glee' when Will was still with pregnancy-faking Terri, fans were delighted to see that the immensely talented Victor Garber played Will’s bowtie-loving father. We never learned Mr. Schuester’s first name, but we did learn that he was inspired by Will’s Acafellas performance and decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a lawyer. Unfortunately we never learned if this dream ever became a reality because we never saw Garber on 'Glee' again — not even at his own son’s wedding!
Sure we may remember the term Acafellas, but do you remember what this group of misfits was really all about? Will, Finn, Puck, Coach Tanaka, and that awkward weirdo from Terri’s store Sheets N’ Things, came together to form teen/adult boy band and they took it way too seriously. They practiced swaying back-in-forth on a nightly basis, truly believed that this group made them sexier, and at one point Will wore a fedora. Maybe it’s a good thing this storyline was forgotten…
This kooky Season 1 and 2 character, portrayed by Stephen Tobolowsky, was a pot-dealing, dream-crushing teacher at McKinley who also had a large collection of porcelain dolls. He was fired from McKinley twice but he still managed to pop up every now and then. He was last seen in what is arguable Season 2’s worst episode, “Night of Neglect” as a member of Sue’s Legion of Doom and started the Heckling Club to ruin the glee club’s benefit event. In the end, Sandy donated to the club after being mesmerized by Mercedes’ “Ain’t No Way,” but we’ve never seen or heard from him since.
The Glee Club Got Stoned
Once again way back in Season 1, the glee clubbers faced all kinds of difficulties in their quest to get to sectionals. In order to raise money for the wheelchair accessible bus to get to the competition, the New Directions had a bake sale. Puck, however, wanted to prove to his baby mama Quinn that he could be a financially supportive father so he bought some marijuana from former McKinley teacher Sandy Ryerson and added the special ingredient to the cupcake batter. Puck offers Quinn all the money the glee club raises but Quinn refuses. Eventually she apologizes for calling him a Lima Loser: right before reuniting with a newly employed Finn. Ahh good ‘ol Season 1 drama.
Back in the second episode of 'Glee,' Will is desperate to give Terri the dream home that she so desperately whines about, so he told Principal Figgins that he would work at night as a janitor — for half the salary. While Will was scraping gum off the bottom of desks, Emma came into the classroom and offered to help her crush clean. This is was one of the first times that 'Glee' fans saw the chemistry between Will and Emma. Remember when he put the chalk dust on her nose? Absolutely adorable!
Kurt and Brittany Dated
Oh yes, Kurt and Brittany were once a real, out and proud couple — well for one episode that is. Back in Season 1, Kurt decided ditch the designer sweaters in exchange for trucker hats and flannel shirts. He was jealous of all the bonding Finn and his father were having so he attempted to impress his daddy dearest by dating Miss Brittany S. Pierce. Despite its off-the-all premise, 'Glee' fans should be glad that this random coupling happened, or else we would never have this brilliant Brittany one-liner: “Kissing my armpits is a really big turn-on for me.”
Remember Bryan Ryan? That’s right, the one-and-only Neil Patrick Harris was once on 'Glee' as a former classmate of Will who was amazing at singing and simultaneously performing magic tricks. This Season 1 villain was determined to cut the arts program at McKinley because he blamed the glee club for ruining his life and giving him false hope to achieve his dreams. After a tug-of-war episode, Bryan Ryan took back his bedazzled jean jackets and went on to star in the local community theater’s production of 'Les Miserables' but unfortunately we haven’t seen that gorgeous head of hair back in Lima since Season 1.
Rachel Had a Crush on Will
While Finn was off singing to Quinn’s parents because he thought he knocked her up, Rachel fell hard for the one person in 'Glee' whom she considered her musical equivalent: Will. She caught him a star tie, cleaned his apartment, cooked him dinner and did anything she could to get close to him — despite the oh-so creepy warnings by Suzie Pepper. Will even sang a brilliant mashup of “Young Girl” and “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” in order to let Rachel know through song that nothing is ever going to happen. At the end of the episode Rachel came to her senses and Will promised that eventually she'd end up with a great guy.
Puck and Mercedes Dated
This relationship only lasted one episode in Season 1, which is why many 'Glee' fans probably forgot that Puckcedes was once a real thing. Soon after Mercedes joined the Cheerios she had a giant leap in popularity at McKinley, while on the other hand Puck's mother forced him to shave his Mohawk off and he then lost his cool factor. Puck courted Mercedes and she eventually agreed to go out with him, after he sang “Lady is a Tramp” in glee club. Mercedes and Santana ended up fighting over Puck in the diva-filled rendition of “The Boy is Mine.” In the end, Mercedes broke up with Puck and quit the Cheerios to stay true to herself. She doesn’t need a boy to make her happy!
Will and Shelby Made Out
Oh yes, you almost forgot about this steamy make-out sesh didn’t you? Back in Season 1 when Will was fresh from his divorce from Terri and dealing with relationship problems with Emma, he met Vocal Adrenaline’s coach for the first time — and things got a little steamy. In “Hell-O” fans witnessed as Shelby and Will had a brief yet “hot” hook up on Will’s couch. Shelby leaves the apartment saying at Will needs to take some time to focus on himself being single and to give her a call when he has everything sorted out. They never locked lips again but it was sure fun while it lasted.
Kurt Had a Crush on Finn
Many people are so completely and utterly in love with Kurt and Blaine’s relationship that they’ve forgotten that Kurt once had a season-long crush on Finn. Kurt often offered advice for Finn’s personal problems and the two bonded over the fact that they both lost a parent. However, after many episodes of unrequited love and one hurtful conversation later, Kurt realized that Finn was never going to look at him in a romantic way. The two became stepbrothers in “Furt” and have had a great relationship since then.
Yet another newbie to McKinley High, Sunshine was first seen rockin’ out to the New Directions Season 2 premiere hit “Empire State of Mind.” We first heard her amazing talent when and Rachel sang an impromptu performance of telephone in the girls' bathroom, but the New Directions lost all hope of getting Sunshine on their team when Rachel gave her directions to a crack house instead of the auditions. Sunshine was bribed into joining Vocal Adrenaline and after a minor freakout at Nationals, Sunshine lead Carmel High to a second place victory in New York. Despite Sunshine and Rachel’s bonding sesh at Nationals, we never saw or heard from this little girl with the big voice again.
Sam Had Dyslexia
Remember way back in the Season 2 premiere when we first met Sam? After firmly establishing that he wasn’t Kevin McCallister from 'Home Alone', we learned a lot about this bleached blonde new kid — including the fact that he is dyslexic. However, this important character trait was never mentioned ever again. This exact same storyline was later recycled (and given the attention that it desperately deserved) when Ryder joined the New Directions in the beginning of Season 4. Now Sam Is just considered a ditsy blonde with a hot bod and a plethora of impressions.
Artie Was on The Football Team
Yeah, I bet you forgot about this one too, huh? In an attempt to win back Tina’s affections, Artie gets the brilliant idea to join the McKinely High football team. This was honestly one of the strangest things — especially because it was during a time when 'Glee' tried to make us care whether the football team won or lost. Unfortunately, Artie’s efforts were not enough to sway Tina’s heart, but 'Glee' fans were treated with a random rendition of Britney Spears’ “Stronger” while Finn ran Artie down the field.
Puck Went to Juvie
In Season 2 many of you probably don’t remember, but Puck was MIA for quite a few episodes. What was the reason for his absence you ask? In “Duets,” Will announced to the group that Puck drive his mother’s Volvo into a convenience store and tried to leave with the entire ATM. Puck later returned in “Never Been Kissed” claiming that he loved Juvie and was the king of all the punks. However, he eventually revealed to Artie that he hated Juvie and it was terrifying because he wasn’t the biggest badass in the place.
Emma Eloped in Vegas
After Will and Emma’s Season 1 breakup, Emma slowly introduces hunky hunk dentist to Will and the glee club. Carl was determined to help Emma get over her OCD and they would do kooky things like mixing red grapes with green grapes in the same bowl. It was pure madness! It was revealed in “Special Education” that Emma and Carl eloped in Las Vegas, but even after being married for more than four months, they never had sex. In a “Night of Neglect” it was revealed that Carl moved out of Emma’s condo and they had the marriage annulled.
Pissed Off Quinn
In the Season 3 premiere, 'Glee' fans were introduced to a brand new Quinn. Complete with a nose ring, hot pink hair, a darker wardrobe and an “ironic” Ryan Seacrest tramp stamp, Quinn was unleashing her inner anger in the most punk way possible. She also hung out with that awful group who proudly referred to themselves as “The Skanks.” Luckily, Quinn was back to her classy self after only a few angsty episodes but we’ll always wonder… whatever happened to that horrible tattoo?
What Happened to Rory?!
How is it that 'Glee' can have an adorable Irish exchange student in their group for nearly a year and then never tell us where he went?! Rory Flanagan was so sweet that he nearly gave fans a toothache when he sang, but after a brief courtship with Sugar we never heard from him again. True, he quietly revealed that he was going to be deported, but this only seemed like a web of lies to win Sugar’s affections. No one in Season 4 has ever explained Rory’s MIA status, not even Brittany — and he was living with her!
Ricky Martin: Spanish Teacher
For one gloriously random bon-bon shaking episode, Ricky Martin graced our TV screens as David Martinez, a Spanish teacher who helped Will realize that he is a terrible at teaching Spanish. After making all the 'Glee' girls swoon with his sexy moves, the episode ended with Will offering David the now-open Spanish teacher position — which David happily accepted. However, since this job offer no one has seen Ricky Martin dancing down the McKinley High Halls and that’s just plain loca!
Joe and Quinn Were Kind of a Thing
In between Quinn’s horrific leg paralyzing car accident and her miraculously quick recovery there was a time when she and the newest new kid were kind of an item. Joe walked his bare feet into rehab to help Quinn stretch and though there were a few near kisses and one embarrassing moment where Joe got overly… excited, the two never really became a full-fledged couple. They did however sing a duet together and went to prom together. Now in Season 4, Joe is still around, but he hardly says anything and often disappears for weeks at a time without any explanation.
