Frances Ella "Fizzy" Fitz, a turn-of-the-century New York City secretary, decides to head for Alaska after news of the gold rush fills her with dreams of wealth. She convinces slick expedition leader P.T. Madison to let her join him as a typist for his burgeoning mining company. When Fizzy and her dog Faust arrive in Nome, she realizes that striking it rich is going to be more difficult than she imagined. The weather and living conditions are unbearable, the government officials are disreputable and P.T. is a con man who has led his mining team to near disaster.
