Gorilla Biscuits punk star dead after suffering stroke

Alex Brown, the guitarist of hardcore punk band Gorilla Biscuits, has died at 52.
Singer Anthony Civarelli has revealed his ex-bandmate passed away after suffering a stroke.
“The world lost a son, brother, uncle, artist, musician and loving friend this week,” Civarelli wrote in an Instagram post. “I lost my bandmate and friend of over 30 years, a piece of my heart died this week and all I can do is think of all the fun, shows, meals, flights and trips we had together. All the late night talks and all the early morning hangs with him and my wife and kids. There will never be another alex brown.”
Iowa native Brown was also a respected painter, who often exhibited his work in New York galleries, and he co-founded fanzine and record label Schism.
Brown featured in the bands Project X and Side by Side. He joined Gorilla Biscuits for their second album, Start Today, in the late 1980s and was a member of the band until their split in 1992. He was part of the group’s 2005 reunion, which is ongoing.
Bass player Arhurt Smilios has also paid tribute to the late guitarist, adding: “I’m going to miss you, Alex. This sums up how you made me feel. I love you, buddy. Completely heartbroken. Stage Right is going to suck.”
