HBO Gives ‘Luck’ a Second Season

Luck HboDespite debuting to fairly modest ratings, HBO is putting its faith in its latest series, Luck. The critically beloved series stars Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Dennis Farina and it now boasts an early order for a second season.

The series, which is produced by Hoffman along with Deadwood creator David Milch, director Michael Mann, and Carolyn Strauss, centers on a host of characters all trying their fates at the same horse-racing track. The complex, layered series has already garnered favor with critics as well as its modest premiere audience of just over one million viewers, plus upcoming guest stars include the likes of Michael Gambon (who you may know better as Harry Potter’s confidant, Dumbledore). The series’ promise only continues to grow. It seems that critical acclaim weilds the greatest power at the pay network; HBO has also kept shows like Bored to Death or Treme on air long past what their meager ratings would suggest. (They did recently pull the plug on Bored to Death, but we can’t win them all.)

Production on the 10-episode second season of Luck begins at the end of February and is set to premiere in January 2013. The first season of Luck airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
