Inconceivable! ‘Princess Bride’ T-Shirt Upsets Airline Passengers

Princess Bride t-shirtInconceivable! Could it really be true that a group of passengers on a Qantas flight to New Zealand are A) so out of touch with pop culture that they haven’t seen the 80s classic The Princess Bride and B) so offended by someone’s geeky T-shirt quoting the film that they had a flight attendant ask him to change his attire?

According to a New Zealand news site, Wynand Mullins was wearing a shirt with a graphic of a name tag sticker that read, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” A commonly cited quote, right? (And, for the record, just another entry on the list of reasons we love the all-around delightful human Mandy Patinkin.)

Apparently it wasn’t recognizable enough for some of his fellow fliers, because a flight attendant came up to him while the flight was boarding and said some of his fellow passengers were intimidated by the shirt and asked him to change it. She left in search of a new shirt for him and didn’t return, so apparently it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Completely hypothetical question, considering as a Hollywood.com reader you are a connoisseur of all things pop culture and fully get the reference, but if you saw someone wearing a novelty T-shirt like the one pictured, even if you didn’t understand the quote would you really be intimidated? And offended enough to mention something to a person of authority?

Either way, it’s clearly a lesson learned for Mullins: When flying the friendly (and oversensitive) skies, maybe don’t wear a T-shirt threatening people’s lives, even if it is a famous quote that people who like happiness and quality movies should know.
