Now that the season seven finale of Grey’s Anatomy is out of the way, it’s time to talk about what’s next, right? Well, in an interview with TVLine, the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes spilled a possible tid-bit of intel, saying that next season could be the last one for the original cast. Duh, duh, duhhhh.
While talking about how she decided upon the twists and turns she left viewers with this season, she said:
I was busy thinking about setting us up for next season, which might be the final season for the [original cast members]. I wanted to spend next season doing nothing but telling stories about the originals, and I felt like in order to do that, we wanted to put everybody in a place where the focus was squarely on Meredith and Derek, Cristina, Alex…
Adding to this, we know that Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo are both going to reach the end of their contracts come the end of next season, which begs the question, is it time to move on? It would seem with all this news that Derek and Meredith might finally get to just be happy for once and that Rhimes long-running medical drama is looking to do what E.R. did once it lost George Clooney and Julianna Marguiles, and that seemed to work alright for a while. Besides, they’ve managed to push and pull this storyline for seven years — I repeat, SEVEN YEARS. It’s time to just put a cap on it and see what other stories they can squeeze out of what’s left of the show. Of course, the answer as to what may lie ahead for Alex and Cristina is a little more hazy because we don’t have a built-in endpoint of their contracts hitting the expiration date alongside the season eight finale, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see for those two.
As for Derek and Meredith, they’re the couple that kept us watching Grey’s in the first place. They’re the Sam and Diane, the Ross and Rachel; but truth be told, I don’t think their on-again off-again romance can stand the ten seasons that the same thing did on Friends. It’s about time they ride off into the sunset or end tragically. Pick a side and move on, amirite?
