It’s Official: Patrick Dempsey Will Leave ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Derek Patrick Dempsey Grey's AnatomyWell, this may not be great for fans of the MerDer romance. While Ellen Pompeo continues to be coy about whether or not she’s planning to leave Grey’s Anatomy, her small screen husband, Patrick Dempsey just made up his mind. And his mind says it’s time to move on. That’s right; after season 8, McDreamy will no longer grace our TV screens with his handsome presence.

Dempsey told Italian Vanity Fair that for him, it’s time to move on from Seattle Grace Hospital. “I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done,” he said.

We sort of knew this might happen, but now that the time has come for one half of MerDer, what happens to the other? Showrunner and creator Shonda Rhimes certainly has a plan somewhere in that brain of hers, as we found out when the possibility of Pompeo and Dempsey leaving came up and she mentioned that she’s aware that she’ll be losing a few of the original cast members and even gave us a little bit of relief about the fate of Meredith and McDreamy. “I feel like Meredith and Derek are meant to be together forever, and we’re going to make sure that in the end they end up together, one would hope — unless one of them dies or something,” she said.

Of course, she ends it with a bit of a kicker, which like I said before, is a slight possibility. I mean, they killed off George, is anyone really safe on this show? They could call TOD on Derek instead of sending the couple off into the sunset. Still, I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping Rhimes is just exercising her funny bone. They could pull something like what happened on ER (sorry, it’s just an easy reference, but you have to admit, it’s oddly similar) when George Clooney left before Julianna Margulies: a temporary breakup, remedied with an eventual happily ever after when the actress finally leaves the show too.

Basically, if Pompeo renews her contract, Rhimes has her work cut out for her, especially if she has a tragic ending somewhere in that brain of hers. The MerDer fans’ backlash could be worse than a ratings dip.
