What Would Happen If John Lennon Auditioned For ‘The Voice’?

If The Beatles were trying to break into the music business today, they might have considered trying out for a singing competition show. Maybe they would have auditioned for The X Factor, or Britain’s Got Talent. But faced with a panel of celebrity judges, would the most influential band of all time move past the first round?

Someone took this idea, and with some 1975 concert footage and masterful editing, created a video that envisioned what would happen if John Lennon tried out for The Voice. As Lennon sings his famous hit, “Imagine,” the judges take a listen from their big red chairs. Adam Levine is not impressed. Usher isn’t feeling it. No one spins their chair around.

This hypothetical scenario emphasizes what many already recognize as a big flaw with singing competitions. These shows favor middle-of-the-road contestants with a wide appeal, while music legends like Lennon and Bob Dylan wouldn’t stand a chance. But while it’s likely that Season 4 Voice winner Danielle Bradbery will soon be forgotten, Lennon’s legacy will be remembered for years to come.
